Biography

J.J. Piezanowski was born in 1952. Following his early efforts in a contemporary pictorial idiom, he went on to acquire a solid grounding in painting techniques: drawing, composition, oil and watercolor techniques… Then came his classical period as a member of the International Society of Figurative Art. Exhibitions of his works were staged in France, Germany, the U.S. and Japan while he pursued his regular job as a metallurgical engineer.

Having fully mastered the painter’s art, he reverted to contemporary idioms, expressing himself in recent years in a post-modern neo-expressionist style.

Exploring the human soul, Piezanowski seeks to capture the signs of time’s flight. His scenic depictions and portraits display de-structured faces and contrasting colors, accentuated as by stigmata of existence. Yet behind the eyes of his subjects you can always find gentleness and some form of inner grace. In such eyes glow sparks of hope.

The artist’s ink drawings are spare, capturing expressions or emotions with simple, often single spontaneous strokes.

Contrasting with this atmosphere, his titles convey a sense of blitheness, seasoned with a touch of poetry and humor, sole defense against a a sometimes violent world – much like life itself.

Biographical note

Possessing both Swiss and French nationality, German born Barbara Gabathuler lives and works in Geneva, where for the last 20 years she has had her own studio. She studied art history at the University of Geneva and received classical training at a number of teaching institutions including the School of Decorative Arts in Geneva.

Statement:

My art work is essentially centered on the research of light, transparency, marks and imprints, colours, lines and textures. My paintings are inspired by Jazz music and strive to possess their own musicality. Moreover, they speak of a passage between the interior and the outside. They are to be understood rather as suggestions than as obligations and certainties.

Barbara Gabathuler’s paintings diffuse intense color Changes. Her art is an abstraction inspired by organic substances. The essential and inherent nature the painter gives to color is a substance that produces multiple feelings, often displaying a variety of rhythms, a feeling of the earth`s own minerals bursting and spreading over the canvas, unlimited to the confines of abstraction.

The red colors are those of the suffocating air, the carmine reds carry the emission of light from the bowels of the earth and they conceal, take hold and stream tides in which different lights ablaze or choke. The blue colors are those of the lakebeds, hardly ever navy blue. Gray color spread, sometimes tormented and which push back their greens to turquoise.

Most of the time, color is worked as a material, polished in its development and only reflects and in turn shows its true substance.

Sometimes a tonal contrast produces a change in plans. A line composes a passage from one universe to another. Here we tackle the only structure which is susceptible to questioning Time, Dusk, Night, and Dawn.

Of German origin, Karin Averkin now lives and works in Geneva.

Gifted with a high potential of creativity since childhood, in her adolescence she chose to express herself through painting. Inspired by nature, she first explored figurative painting before, over the years, turning to abstract art and mixed media. Today, she uses different textures (paper, fabrics, sand…) and a rich palette of colours which seem to vibrate to the rhythm of the various kinds of music she listens to while painting.

It is no coincidence if, in addition to her painting, she has moved professionally towards architecture and interior design to express her creativity.

Saskia Bremer was born in Holland, in 1954
She lives and works in Holland, Portugal and Switzerland

Some people take a roundabout way before actually settling down to what they really want to do. From her early days Saskia Bremer developed an artistic passion.

However bread and butter had to come to the table. So, she enrolled in a teacher training course selecting drawing as her specialization and subsequently worked many years in different schools. However the passion never left her, and in 1986 she decided to leave the “roundabout” and enrolled as an evening student at the Royal Academy in The Hague. The very strict regime at the Academy was not quite to her liking, but she finished the course successfully in 1991. Freed from the rules at the Academy, she quickly developed her own style.

Bright colours and a combination of realism and abstract are the key elements in her work. Very rapidly, Saskia could not be stopped anymore:  after the first sell-out exhibition in 1994 she decided to reduce her hours of teaching, and  after 1996 she became a full time artist. Since then, her name has been circulating among art-loving Holland. Various assignments and exhibitions have come her way in other countries like Belgium, Germany and Portugal. At the Boukamel Contemporary Art Gallery in London all her works displayed were sold out within days.

One well known art critic in Holland compared Saskia’s works with Chagall’s. Though this is perhaps a slightly excessive compliment, it is perfectly true that Saskia’s work “makes you happy” – the statement of an elderly lady who bought a painting of hers after her husband’s death. That is more than enough encouragement for Saskia to continue to paint and to make the world look bright and happy.

“I was born with a pencil in hand,” Jocelyne Pache will tell you in all earnestness. Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, in an artistically active family, she began drawing at a very early age – to the utter despair of her teachers, as she remembers. “I used to draw everything that came to mind all over the margins of my school and exercise books! My history books quickly featured pencilled friezes of heroic or romantic scenes while all manner of butterflies and birds fluttered over my natural sciences books; needless to say my geography albums looked like travel guides to distant and exotic destinations!”

With that kind of a start in life, Jocelyne Pache inevitably ended up enrolling in a school of fine arts, from which she seamlessly graduated to illustrating children’s books and games. French publishers eventually noticed and liked her work and extended to her an invitation to work in Paris. Once set up in Paris, she was soon involved in the design of product lines for adults – porcelain, jewelry, household and table linen, haute couture textiles, fashion accessories and more. Although thrilled to be part of the Paris design scene, she much regretted that her own artistic production had had to take a back seat to the rest. All that is now a thing of the past.

“Today,” she says, “I’m happy to give my drawing hand free rein and let my pen and pencil take me wherever my dreams and my fancy suggest.”
